I used to try SO hard to make healthy food choices. I really did.
It seems like no matter how hard I tried to eat healthy, I always went back to eating the same old things. Most of which were anything but good for me. Like pizza, bagels, cereal, yogurt, pasta… and ice cream.
I tried the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet, and even drank diet sodas (yuck) and resorted to artificial sugars like Splenda (ugh).
I even convinced myself that I wasn’t on a “diet”. I told myself that I was just trying to eat healthy. But really, I was unhappy with my body and wanted to be thinner – no matter what I put my body through.
In the end, I always came back to ice cream.
And I was left feeling worse off than I was before.
Guilty and ashamed, I’d eat my ice cream in secret while I contemplated what diet I was going to attempt next.
Thankfully, I FINALLY stopped the cycle and ditched dieting for GOOD. To read why I stopped and you should too, check out the article I wrote for mindbodygreen here.
Or read below for a summary. 5 REAL REASONS TO GIVE UP DIETING (TO LOSE WEIGHT FOR GOOD)
1. DIETS ALWAYS BACKFIRE
The cravings for things we can’t have become powerful and overwhelming. They often become so intense that we end up ditching the diet and caving. We always end up bingeing on the forbidden foods. I always ended up binging on ice cream.
2. DIETS INCREASE CRAVINGS
Most diets have us reaching for foods that have been processed to the point that they have little to no nutrient value.
This means that our bodies will continue to crave nutrients and tell our brains that we’re hungry. That’s when we have cravings. Only the cravings don’t stop because chances are, we continue to reach for processed food with no nutrients so our body continues to tell us it’s hungry – for nutrition!
I was constantly hungry even though my belly felt like I couldn’t possibly fit more into it. There was always room for ice cream!
3. DIETS DON’T ADDRESS THE REAL PROBLEM
How often do you eat because of a heightened emotion like sadness, loneliness or boredom?
Even if you find a diet you can follow long-term, if you never address the root of the problem, it won’t work.
4. DIETS CAN CONTROL YOUR LIFE
Diets keep us from doing things that we love because we’re always waiting to look or feel a certain way before we can chill out and enjoy our surroundings.
Also, living in the moment is rare because the first thing on our mind is usually food and not what’s in front of us.
4. DIETS AREN’T ASSOCIATED WITH HEALTH
Even though I told myself I was dieting to be healthy, I wasn’t.
I’d heard how processed foods were bad for you and knew full well that many of the foods I was eating didn’t have any nutritional value, but I ate them anyway.
I wasn’t worried about chronic disease or any of the health complications the foods were associated with. All I wanted was to be thin and look good. I didn’t care how negatively they affected my body.
So, please, ditch the diet and eat whole foods that replenish your body and give it what it needs to thrive and function properly. Not only will you look amazing but you’ll feel incredible too!
